PhDone! Congrats Dr. Marième Gueye!
🎓 Hora est ! There is a new Doctor in town, as this past Wednesday Marième Gueye brilliantly defended her PhD Thesis titled "Biofabrication Strategies for Making Hematopoietic Tissues". Huge congrats to Marième for this fantastic achievement!

Since 2021, as part of the European Research Council (ERC) VOLUME-BIO project (grant agreement 949806), Marième developed different types of organoids for the co-culture, preservation and expansion of hematopoietic stem cells, the cells that during our lifetime produce blood cells and build our immune system. Enabling to expand these cells in the lab is vital to create new therapies that rely on hematopoietic stem cell transplant, a key treatment for many blood cancers (i.e. leukemia). Together with the other members of the supervisory team Catherine Robin Hubrecht Institute and Alessia Longoni, and with the precious collaboration of Dr. Milad Milo Rezvani and Lab Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin Marième built complex 3D niches using bone marrow and blood vessel organoids and liver organoids, to capture different stages of the development of our haematopoietic system. Using #volumetric #bioprinting, she created advanced systems to culture these organoids and HSCs co-culture under dynamic flow stimulation. Marième's did an outstanding job, and helped us figure out what works (and what does not!) to move this research forward, and her results have been the seed for the now ongoing NWO (Dutch Research Council) VIDI project TIMESTAMP.

On behalf of our team: thanks to Marième for all this years and dedication, and for making our lab an even more fun place to be, and looking forward to see your upcoming successes in your next professional adventure!
